A Delicate Balance - Scarves by Jill Dexter
Hand woven scarves by Jill Dexter
I have been weaving for over 30 years, completing the Bradford Weaving design HND in 2004.
For this environmental themed exhibition I have considered the
harm to which coral is exposed. Having found various pictures of coral I have tried to reproduce the shapes in my designs. As weaving is by its construction linear producing round shapes took some time and many samples. The weave structure is Brighton Honeycombe.
The fern design is a broken twill design.
My yarns are sustainable, mainly Tencel which is produced from Eucalyptus trees and is therefore a cellulose fibre like cotton and linen. It has a beautiful sheen and drape. One scarf is made from Merino wool a yarn I love for its softness. All the threads were hand dyed with Procion dyes, giving vibrant colour, being light and colour fast, which unfortunately natural dyes are not
