Serendipity plays a big part in my work, so plastic hole in the wall cards, windscreen wipers, corrugated cardboard, swiss army knife, sandpaper, atomisers and garden spray bottles are just some of the tools I use in the early construction of a work. Brushes are used later, to finish a painting. Work is usually in acrylic and sometimes mixed media. I also work in series, using a different palette for each, this ensures continuity and the paintings look good when hung. Inspiration comes from mountains and the sea, having spent most of my youth serving in the RN, whilst the Wainwright Fells, Snowdonia and the Munro’s of Scotland also lend themselves to my practise.
Formal studies include B.A. (Hons) Fine Art and M.A. Art and Design in Context, both achieved at Backhouse Park, Sunderland University. My studio in Southeast Northumberland is at the rear of my house and was purpose built in 1997.
